[TAKE ACTION] Denounce Anti-Sikh Post from Member of Congress

On June 6, Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) posted on social media that it was "deeply troubling" for a Sikh to lead prayer at the House of Representatives, because the United States was founded as a "Christian nation." She initially referred to the Sikh man as a "Muslim," but edited—and then completely deleted—her post.

We live in a diverse society made up of people from all faiths and walks of life. Sikhs and Muslims both contribute to communities throughout Illinois and the United States as a whole. They have done so for decades despite bigotry from public figures, including elected officials like Congresswoman Miller. Message:

I am writing to express my anger and disappointment with Congresswoman Miller’s since-deleted social media post indicating her apparent belief that Sikhs and Muslims are not welcome in Congress.

We live in a diverse society made up of people from all faiths and walks of life. Sikhs and Muslims both contribute to communities throughout Illinois and the United States as a whole. They have done so for decades despite persistent casual and cruel bigotry from public figures—including elected officials like Congresswoman Miller.

Congresswoman Miller should educate herself on the differences between Sikhs and Muslims. She must also recognize that people of all faiths have a role to play in civic life in America. Diversity is and remains our nation’s strength.

Deleting the post or pretending it didn’t happen is not acceptable. I expect Congresswoman Miller to issue a full apology for her remarks, and to take additional action to demonstrate that she is willing to respect and engage Sikhs, Muslims, and people from all kinds of other communities. As an elected representative, she is responsible for nothing less.
